Art in Action

In the 2013–14 school year, support from PACF helped Belle Haven Community School create a culture of art through the Art in Action program.  This partnership allowed Art in Action to train teachers at Belle Haven to deliver our comprehensive visual arts curriculum to their students.  According to Candice Johnson, one of the teachers involved in the program: “The kids super love the projects.  So far we’ve worked on Polynesian mats, butterflies, the autobiographical Chagall project, and African masks. The kids really enjoy using the different media and especially being creative!”

Students in school communities such as Belle Haven’s often go without art and the skills it delivers, including creativity, communication, critical thinking, and collaboration.  Partnerships such as the one between PACF, Art in Action, and the Belle Haven Community School help ensure equal access to art for all students.

“I like the way the parents teach us about art.  I especially like it when they tell the history about the painting, painter, or both.  The cool thing is that I learn a little history and a lot of art.”
